Oodles of New Music!!! Ventanas + Gray Matter + Crooked House Road!!!

Exciting news, Ventanas is celebrating the release of “Arrelumbre” at the Aga Khan Museum this Friday, June 5th! Lead by Tamar Ilana, Ventanas unites Flamenco with the music of Morocco, Macedonia, Greek, and the Middle East. I joined the band for a cross-country tour last summer (Vancouver Folk Festival, Festival des traditions du monde de Sherbrooke, Summerfolk) – we recorded Arrelumbre ("Shine" in Spanish ) in the Fall. Justin joined us for that recording session, and he'll be with the band again for the CD Release concert (along with special guests percussionist Waleed Abdulhamid and Flamenco dancer Ilse Gudiño)! We're all very proud of “Arrelumbre” – can’t wait to celebrate this Friday! If you’re looking for something fun for Friday, invite a friend to the “Arrelumbre” CD Release (use the special promo code "Darbouka" for 10% off) – and then join us for the after-party :)

CHR for Women - Benefit Concert for Sistering

Last Thursday morning, walking near my place at Ossington & Bloor, I met a woman with an empty glaze in her eyes; she wasn’t wearing much more than a worn-out coat – rather ill equipped for winter in Toronto.

“‘Scuse me, sir. Do you know where Sistering is?”
“I don’t. … But I can help you find it.”
“Thanks. I haven’t slept in 36 hours - I’m in rough shape.”

We looked it up on my phone. Turns out, she was close – Sistering: A Woman's Place is just two blocks west of Ossington - 962 Bloor St. West. I showed her to the door, she went into a safe place with a hot breakfast.

‪#‎CHRforWomen‬ Part II - Thursday (March 26) at 3030 - in support of Sistering - the March instalment of the series in support of local charities focused on aiding women struggling against poverty and violence. Since 1990, Sistering (www.sistering.org) has been providing a variety of essential services to homeless and marginalized women.‪#‎DonateWhatYouCan‬

Sistering “provides basic services to women who are homeless, underhoused, low income or marginalized and are looking for a safe and welcoming place to go during the day. In a welcoming, non-judgmental environment women can access much-needed supports. Sistering serves a racially, culturally and linguistically diverse population in a positive environment through shared commitment to principles of equity and access.”
